Quran

The aim of the Quran class is to teach the correct method of reading the Quran with the proper pronunciation of letters and rules of tajweed. Our aim is to improve the child's fluency in reading the Quran.

From the beginner level, students are thoroughly taught the foundations of proper pronunciation of Arabic letters making clear distinction between each letter and how to pronounce each letter. As students progress they are introduced to newer tajweed rules of Quran. To consolidate their understanding, a method is used where the teacher reads examples from the textbook or Quran to the students after which they as a group read back. The class is highly interactive with students asked to answer questions that allow them to test their knowledge and to bring out enthusiasm for learning to read the Quran. After the interactive session, students are then individually assessed and are encouraged to put into practice rules covered earlier or taught in previous lessons.

Learning to read the Quran properly is a big subject and one that takes time to perfect. For this reason it is imperative that parents are also involved and work with teachers to help their child progress.

Once students have learnt letter recognition the books we use are Graded Steps in Quran Reading. This is used in Classes 1 - 3.

About the Book (from publisher)

This carefully graded book with 48 Units covers the elements of reading the Arabic script and reading the Qur’an in the ‘UTHMANI SCRIPT. The ‘Uthmani script is excellent for teaching/learning the rules of tajwid or precise Qur’anic recitation. The script is the one used in the Madinah Mus-haf, superbly calligraphed by the Damascene calligrapher, ‘Uthman Taha.

Each Unit and each line of Graded Steps in Qur’an Reading is numbered. This makes it easy for class teaching and to follow the accompanying CDs. Short surahs and du’as or supplications on the Qur’an are also included.

A NOTE ON THE ‘UTHMANI SCRIPT AND QUR’AN RECITATION

Beautiful Qur’anic recitation comes from the precision of the science of linguistics, the artistic range of the human voice, and the awe of knowing the Source of this sacred text.

The best way to learn to recite the Qur’an properly is to listen to a good reciter, then to recite and have your recitation checked by a good reciter. But knowing the features of the ‘Uthmani script, as it clarifies the rules of Tajwid, makes precise and beautiful recitation easier.

With the wide availability of the Madinah Mus-haf elegantly written in the Uthmani script by the the Damascene calligrapher ‘Uthman Taha, this script is the standard for clarity and precision for the proper reading of the Qur’an.

Graded Steps in Qur’an Reading (GSQR) seeks to make the Uthmani script more accessible and easy to use. Its eight carefully graded sequence of Units cover letter recognition and the vowels and signs of reading the Arabic script. From the first ‘Quick Start’ Unit, those absolutely new to the Arabic script will be amazed by how quickly they can become familiar with the basic features of the Arabic script.

Graded Steps in Qur’an Reading shows that the rules of Tajwid are there to make pronunciation easy, naturally free-flowing, and beautiful.
